Encloses memorial from Fitzgerald to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking advance of the final quarter salary earned by her husband and sum of £3 15s paid into the Superannuation Fund and ‘such other Charitable provision…in order to enable your afflicted Memoralists to return to her native Country [England]’. She stresses her poverty of circumstance and claims her husband’s ‘remains were interred at the expense of Strangers’ following a period in Dr Steven’s Hospital in Dublin.

Letter from Charles Malcolm, Captain of the King’s yacht [‘William and Mary’], Royal Harbour of George IV, Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire], County Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing letter from Samuel Raven, captain, ship ‘Essex’, Kingstown, to Malcolm, seeking permission to remove a sunken vessel moored in a location adjacent to the Royal yacht in order that he might occupy that space with the ‘Essex’ which is to be deployed as a convict hulk. He cautions the task must be commenced immediately due to the ‘constant ground swell in this Port, and having her mast standing, she will sink down into the Sand’.

Letter from Edward Cotter, County Waterford, concerning an allegation against Mathew Dugan over an act of fornication against Bridget Farrell

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Edward Cotter, late soldier, Patrick Street, Waterford, County Waterford, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting government influence to force intervention by Henry Alcock, magistrate, against Mathew Dugan, whom he accuses of committing an act of fornication against his step daughter, Bridget Farrell, a ‘Simple Girl’. Alleging that Dugan, ‘an opulent farmer’, engaged in sex without consent with the girl, who was employed as maid at his dwelling in Bessborough, County Kilkenny, after which she became pregnant and claiming that Dugan attempted to entice her to name ‘an old Simple Country man’ as the father but on her refusal he withdrew his offer of financial support for her yet unborn infant. Also affidavit of Farrell contending that Dugan committed adultery with her and ‘is the father of the Child She is Carrying by which She is incapable of Earning Her Bread By him’, sworn before Alcock. Also affidavit of Mary Cotter [mother of Farrell], reiterating the charge against Dugan and making claim that he promised to pay maintenance towards Farrell's welfare and that of her child. Also note on financial settlement offered to Farrell by Dugan with comment by Alcock, ‘I think this a very fair settlement if agreed on’.

Letter from the Commissioners for Paving, Dublin, concerning criticism by the Lord Mayer of Dublin

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Major Alexander Taylor, Alderman Mark Bloxham and Thomas N Edgworth, Commissioners for Paving, Paving Corporation House, Mary Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, acknowledging receipt of letter and paper with charges made against their board by the Lord Mayor of Dublin [Drury Jones]. Returning document listing ten charges, covering complaints in relation to removal of manure from streets, condition of paving, condition of public footways, lack of sewers in Cole’s Lane and Drury Lane, failure to pave and clean markets, failure to remove obstructions from certain streets, lack of cleaning and lighting at city outlets, failure to remove heaps of muck after cleaning, lack of gas lighting throughout city and attitude of ‘Great inattention’ to queries raised by public, with ‘observations’ written in response to each by commissioners. Also letter from George Archer, secretary to the Lord Mayer, Mansion House, Dublin, to Gregory, enclosing ‘a Statement respecting the negligence and inattention of the Paving Board’. Also letter from Taylor and Bloxham, to Gregory, complaining of an article published in the ‘Morning Star’ newspaper alleging the paving board behaved in a disrespectful fashion towards the Lord Mayor and gentlemen of the jury, and offering an explanation of events complained of. Also copy of the ‘Morning Star’ with column marked in ink headed ‘Inefficiency of the Paving Board! Insolence of the Commissioners! Their Unmannerly, Offensive, and Daring Demeanour [sic] Towards the Lord Mayer of Dublin, and Twenty Gentlemen of the Market Jury!’, dated 17 February 1824. Also ‘Extracts of correspondence between the Right Hon[oura]ble the Lord Mayer and the Commissioners for Paving’.

Petition of Patrick Griffin, farmer, Caher, County Limerick, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting compensation due to loss of dwelling and belongings. Complains his ‘house was attacked and levelled [sic] by a party of Insurgents in the month of February 1822 and all his Hay, Corn and other property destroyed’; adds he assisted in the prosecution of the gang leader John Ready, who was tried and subsequently transported. Also note from Mathew Barrington, crown solicitor, Munster circuit, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, conforming Griffin’s evidence at the trial of Ready and observing ‘If he made the proper Application at the Assizes he would have obtained a presentment for Damages’.

Claims to have served for a period of 16 years in the North Mayo Militia, and has the recommendation of Colonel Cuff and Major Jackson; asserts in reference to a previous application for employment as a water guard at Castlebar, ‘I would have been appointed…but it was thrown out by [the] Magistrates who had appointed their own Friends and Followers’.
