Letter from Thomas Finlay, register and paymaster, Foundling Hospital, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, placing before government an application for remuneration from William Lucas, Thomas Maguire and John Fisher, former collectors of Foundling Hospital tax, and requesting consideration. With note on base from John Sealy Townsend, King’s Counsel and legal advisor to the Chief Secretary’s Office, stating that the power provided by the act [50th of George III, Chapter 192] does not allow for issue of superannuation in their cases, 17 March; 4 April 1825. Encloses memorial from Lucas, Maguire and Fisher to the governors of the Foundling Hospital, seeking intervention with government for payment of superannuation allowance as consistent with the terms of two act of parliament which they cite. Refers to their past labours and responsibilities and complain of loss of positions due to a repeal of the hospital tax, [no date]. Also extract from the minutes of a meeting of the board of governors of the hospital, resolving that a recommendation be made to the Lord Lieutenant for payment of an annuity of £25 per year to Lucas, and £20 apiece per year to Maguire and Fisher, signed by Finlay, 10 March 1825.

Encloses letter from Thomas Sherrard and David Henry Sherrard, secretaries, commissioners of wide streets, 1 Blessington Street, Dublin, enclosing a report on the ‘Insulation of the Four Courts & Widening [of] Pill Lane [Chancery Street]’. Incorporates a hand coloured map on reverse of report showing the area identified for improvement; the map shows a long section of Pill Lane [holdings marked numbers 57 to 84], a shorter section along Mountrath Street with a boundary that stretches along the back of the courts to a smaller pointed area touching Church Street. States that the proposes work will cost in the region of 38 to 40 thousand pounds, being substantially the removal of old buildings along Pill Lane, 18; 21 March 1825. Letter from Dr Francis Barker, secretary, General Board of Health, 22 Bagot Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, responding to a reported outbreak of ‘a malignant spotted fever’ in the parishes of Clonrush [County Galway] and Inniscaltra and Moynoe [County Clare]. Indicates he has provided in writing information on the best means to prevent and contain the disease, 28 March 1825. Returns letter from John Burke, Tintrim, County Galway, magistrate of County Galway, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to the appearance of fever in the parishes and surrounding district and warning of difficulty in preventing its spread due to the ‘filthy habitations, and habits of the poor people’. Undertakes to make rental payments on the concern in question and observes that the body has received support from all classes in society and has collected £1,600 in subscriptions, 22; 29 March 1825. File containing application from the committee of the bar to have a new building erected for use of the library at the Four Courts, Dublin. Includes letter from Charles Vesey and Richard Sheil, committee of the bar, Law Library, Four Courts, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, expressing intention to erect a new room for the use of the library adjoining the Rolls Court and seeking to have a plan and estimate for the work prepared by Francis Johnston, architect and inspector of civil buildings. Notes they have received the sanction of the Master of the Rolls [Sir William McMahon] and the benchers, and remarks their proposal is to come before a meeting of the standing committee of the benchers, 5 February 1825. Also includes letter from Johnston, Architect's Office, Dublin Castle, to Gregory indicating willingness to undertake preparation of a plan and estimate for the proposed library. Adds the issue of private money being expended on a public building, as planned, should be given serious consideration by government in due course, 10 February 1825. Also includes letter from the committee of the bar to Gregory, stating that money to build the proposed library will be drawn out of the funds of the law society. Requests sanction of government on the project and remarks the Master of the Rolls is concerned that work should begin without loss of time and proceed through the ‘long vacation’, 6 May 1825.

Letter from Richard Verschoyle, Graves Chamney Swan, Francis Hodgkinson, Abraham Bradley King and Captain Charles Malcolm, commissioners of the Royal Harbour of George IV, Board Room, Kingston [Dunleary; Dún Laoghaire], County Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on progress of work at the harbour at Kingston and confirming that recommendations from the lords of the admiralty ‘shall be strictly complied with’, 24 March 1825. Encloses for information copy of account of expenditure on harbour, covering period from 6 January 1824 to 5 January 1825; also copy of ‘Probable Expense’ of continuing work between 5 April 1824 to 5 April 1826; and also copy of document showing the ‘Cause of Increase or Decrease between the Estimates for 1824 and 1825’. Also encloses copy of letter from the chief magistrates to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, seeking support for a query on a clause attached to the Police Amendment Act with a view to securing an increase in their salaries, 4 March 1824. Draft query on account of Mathew Barrington, crown solicitor for the Munster circuit, concerning an increase in his claim to expenses for the year 1824. Raises issue over the disparity in crown prosecutions and claims in the years 1823 and 1824. In the former year, 214 cases were successfully brought before the courts, with expenses costing £7,579; in the latter year just 90 crown prosecutions were carried under Barrington, with an expenses claim of £8, 923. Requests a statement in explanation. Also sheet showing draft calculations and breakdown of all Irish legal circuits indicating expenses claims by crown solicitors for the years 1823 and 1824.
