Letter from Reverend William Peacock, Moate, County Westmeath, seeking a district constabulary station |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Reverend William Peacock, [magistrate and Church of Ireland clergyman], Mount Temple, Moate, County Westmeath, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, calling on government to provide a greater distribution of police constabulary in his immediate district. Emphasises the lack of respect for the law in his neighbourhood, a place, he complains where ‘not a night occurs without some poor person being beaten, or his house attacked’. Points to the uneven distribution of police stations in the region, with those areas where magistrates reside being well protected, whereas those populated by the lower orders are left open to the forces of disorder. He includes a freehand sketch overleaf to demonstrate the conspicuous lack of police protection across large portions of his locality. |
