SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John S Smyth, magistrate for counties Londonderry and Antrim, St Helena, Toome, County Antrim, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, acknowledging the response to his earlier letter expressing a query over the fishery laws, but remarking he has not received an adequate answer. Encloses a copy of a ‘Case for Counsel’ in which he requests direction as to his power to administer the law in a matter relating to a dispute on Lough Neagh. Since he is not a resident of the county in which the particular offence took place [Londonderry], he asks does he possess jurisdiction and authority to act under the fishery laws [17th and 18th of King George III] in the case in question. Letter from Francis Whyte, captain of the Redhills corps of yeomanry, reporting on an investigation of a riot in the village of Redhills, County Cavan

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Brigade Major Semple, [Cavan] yeomanry, Belturbet, County Cavan, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing a letter from Francis Whyte [White], captain of the Redhills corps of yeomanry, Redhills Lodge, reporting on an investigation of a riot in the village of Redhills on 24th of October. He observes in the course of the affray the ‘Police were assailed by a large mob of the Country people’ who assembled for the purpose of making ‘a rescue’; in the ensuing struggle, he continues, stones were thrown, a policeman’s gun was broken, and a couple of shots discharged which ‘badly wounded’ one young male. An initial examination of the riot was carried out with help from Alexander Saunderson, magistrate, and later the bench of magistrates sat at Belturbet, where warrants were issued for the arrest of three rioters.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Major James Tandy, chief police magistrate for counties Carlow, Wicklow, and Kildare, Grangebeg, Kilcullen, County Kildare, reporting on a malicious attack upon 8 sheep belonging to John Bollard of the townland of Blackhill near Dunlavin in County Wicklow. The outrage, he continues, took place on 2nd December last, and it appears, the aggressors used a scythe or similar sharp instrument to inflict the injuries on the stock. So far, those responsible have not been found nor is it known why the attack took place except the owner took possession of the holding, where sometime earlier a tenant was ejected.
