TITLE: |
Letter from John S Smyth, magistrate for counties Londonderry and Antrim, County Antrim, seeking clarification over power to act under the fishery laws |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from John S Smyth, magistrate for counties Londonderry and Antrim, St Helena, Toome, County Antrim, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, acknowledging the response to his earlier letter expressing a query over the fishery laws, but remarking he has not received an adequate answer. Encloses a copy of a ‘Case for Counsel’ in which he requests direction as to his power to administer the law in a matter relating to a dispute on Lough Neagh. Since he is not a resident of the county in which the particular offence took place [Londonderry], he asks does he possess jurisdiction and authority to act under the fishery laws [17th and 18th of King George III] in the case in question.
