TITLE:

Letter from Major George Warburton, inspector general of police for Connaught, concerning the alleged emergence of a new subversive organisation in south County Galway

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Major George Warburton, inspector general of police for Connaught, Ballinasloe, County Galway, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, offering observations on the value of information on a new wave of political hostility received from a source in County Galway. Encloses copy letter from Denis H Kelly, magistrate of counties Galway and Roscommon, Castle Kelly [Castlekelly], Ballinasloe, revealing that a trusted local informant has divulged some important ‘secret information’ on the emergence of a new subversive organisation in the region. The body in question, he continues, has its origins in the south of the county and is under the leadership of the sons of substantial farmers, each of whom has 50 men under his command. In structure and shape, he notes, it is like the Catholic Association, but tends to operate solely during daylight hours. He laments the contagion is now spreading into the north of the county and is facilitated by such agents as Mick Larkin of Dalystown and ’Fallon’ of Kilconnell.
