Also letter from [R Baney], magistrate, Kilrush, [County Clare], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, outlining his reasons for dismissing Scanlon’s testimony and noting that Scanlon claimed to have been raped before by Mullins but claims that she did not report it because John Singleton, the High Sherriff was Mullin’s landlord. Letters from Lady Caroline Anderson, Buttevant Castle, [County Cork], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary and William Gregory, Under Secretary, enquiring if any government fund was available for the building of a typhus fever hospital in Buttevant for the poor; noting the efforts and monies raised by a committee, chaired by her husband, Sir James, for the hospital and for the poor in their ‘absentee neighbourhood’; reporting on their failed efforts to encourage the Grand Jury to contribute to the project; enquiring if her husband will be granted the ‘trifling pension’ of £200 per annum as alluded to by the Lord Lieutenant. Also copy of resolution of a meeting of parishioners at Buttevant, chaired by Sir James, at which a fund was created for erection of a fever hospital – includes list of subscribers. Also letter from Ennismore [Richard Hare, Viscount Ennismore], Convamore [House], [County Cork], to Lady Anderson, informing her that [the Grand Jury] did not vote funds towards the hospital and that the law on this matter is not ‘well understood’. Also internal notes from Goulburn to Gregory seeking the legal opinion of JS Townsend and handwritten note [probably from Goulburn] requesting Gregory to forward an answer to her ‘as has been given in other similar cases’. Also copy of letter from William Baily Wallace, North Great Georges Street, Dublin, to Lady Anderson, stating that Sir James could purchase the castle and estate if he receives a government pension of £200 per annum. |
