Letter from George Hamilton, Hampton [Hampton Hall, Balbriggan, County Dublin], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, London, drawing attention to the fact that nearly 300 ‘persons of the lowest and worst description’ have encroached upon the commons of Ballymore-Eustace, Saggart and Lusk and subsequently have registered as 40s freeholders. Fearing that this considerable body could affect election outcomes and requesting enforcement of the law so as to grant justice to the ‘bona fide freeholders’. Mentioning Mr Martin’s proposed bill concerning fictitious 40s freeholders, Henry Parnell’s original bill and adding that he has written to Lord Liverpool and Robert Peel on the subject. |

Letter from John Fitzgerald, Church of Ireland prebandary of Tullybracky, Tullybracky Glebe, [County Limerick], to unspecified recipient, outlining in detail a series of complaints against the following magistrates; De Courcy O’Grady, Joseph Gubbins, Darby O’Grady, who presided over the Bruff Petty Sessions. Claiming that the magistrates refused to assist his efforts or provide a party of constables to enforce the collection of outstanding tithes, due to his dispute with them over the setting of rates. Mentioning in particular his efforts to enforce payment from Patrick and John Ryan which was violently resisted on a number of occasions and noting that Constable Thomas Butler claimed that he was instructed by the magistrates not to carry out an arrest warrant. Noting that he made a complaint to Thomas Doolan, Chief Constable and calling as a witness, Rev Preston of Amy. Claiming that the county was lawless and that the magistrates and police did not prevent a faction fight at the fair at Dromin, [County Limerick]. Also note stating that Fitzgerald should take his complaint to the [Lord] Chancellor or Court of Kings Bench. |
