Letter from Rev George Vernon, [rector of Carlow], to Lord Norbury [John Toler, 1st Earl of Norbury], recommending that Catherine Moore be confined in gaol until some safe place be found for her; noting that she is in gaol ‘on account of the business of the Priest at Leighlin Bridge’ and that her life would be in danger if she was ‘set at large’ outside the prison. Also letter from Norbury, Carlow Assizes, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that Moore was imprisoned following a malicious charge made against her which was instigated by [] Ryan, a [catholic] friar; adding that Moore had charged Ryan with having ‘an illicit intercourse’ [with her] which was investigated by [James] Doyle, catholic Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin; adding that the ‘wretched Fryar has put an end to himself’[committed suicide]. |
