Burrowes also notes the scarcity of food in the area and blames the unrest on those who keep the people under the ‘influence of superstition and bigotry and in utter ignorance of the sacred scripture’. |

Concluding that the recent murder at Curraheen occurred because the deceased was a ‘keeper’ who outbid the previous owner. Drawing attention to the ‘habitual aversion of the peasantry to persons employed as ‘keepers’ or those who take land formerly belonging to evicted tenants. Also questioning if the tenants on the Commons of Slievegrine should be allowed to retain their arms. Surmising that during the forthcoming parliamentary election the tenants’ will be torn between their temporal and spiritual interests as the catholic clergy exhort their influence. |
