SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letters from Rev Nicholas Herbert, Parsonage, New Inn, [County Tipperary], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary and William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting that the mail coach from Dublin to Cork was attacked at Rockwell, between Cashel and New Inn during which incident one of the banditti was killed. Blaming the ‘inflammatory language of the Patriotic Orators’ for agitating the people and adding that Rev Wyse and others have had their guns stolen. Also noting that a gang of men with blackened faces attacked the house of Patt Tobin, and that during the struggle a noted character named Hogan was captured; adding that Hogan is also suspected of conducting the attack on the mail coach. Includes annotation praising the magisterial endeavours of Herbert.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers concerning incidents of intimidation and violence which occurred at the parliamentary elections at Tralee. Includes statement signed by 27 magistrates and freeholders, Tralee, protesting against the ‘arbitrary, partial and illegal conduct’ of the High Sheriff of Kerry during the election; noting that the sheriff linked himself to one party and attempted to declare Col Crosbie and the Knight of Kerry elected on a show of hands; accusing the sheriff of stationing the military with fixed bayonets in the town while instructing the police to escort hundreds of Lord Ventry’s tenants and positioning himself in the court house with 60 rifle men who were commanded to fire on the people leading to six deaths. Also address from 15 electors of County Kerry, including William Hare, to the High Sheriff, complaining that armed mobs have been administering illegal oaths and preventing electors from entering Tralee and seeking to have the poll adjourned until the freedom and safety of electors can be guaranteed by the military and constabulary. Also affidavits sworn by John Halloran, Denis Collins, Edmond Lee, John Cain, Denis Nowlan, William Gough, Edmond Kenna, Cornelius Sullivan, claiming that an armed party stationed themselves on the roads leading to Tralee and prevented supporters of William Hare from entering the town. Includes extensive annotation from Richard Wellesley, recommending that the documents be shown to the attorney and solicitor generals and that Maj Willcocks proceed to the town; adding that it is not proper for police to give escorts to voters in normal circumstances. Letter from William Lambert, Ballinvoher, Waterford, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, recounting how he has become the victim of violent intimidation having been involved in a land dispute with a catholic priest. Recounting how he evicted Rev Fitzpatrick, catholic priest, for non-payment of rent, from a house he rented to him through the late Mr Newport of Belmont; noting that no one would lease the house and land from him and that he decided to reside in the property himself. Recounting his difficulty in getting police assistance as he resides in County Kilkenny outside the jurisdiction of the nearby police in Waterford city. Claiming that his local magistrates is a bigoted catholic who will not assist him as he is a protestant.
