Letter from Rev J Connolly, Ballingarry Glebe, Borrisokane, [County Tipperary], reporting that Abraham Mahon was murdered at a hurling [match] that took place at Ballysteeny, Modreeny, [County Tipperary] from a ‘blow of one [?] heavy clubs called [?] or two handed wattles’. Noting that an inquest has found Mortagh Duane guilty of wilful murder and claiming that ‘meeting to hurle’ is a pretext to assemble to swear illegal oaths and organise. Noting that he, together with the police, dispersed a crowd of over 3000 persons assembled recently under the pretence of hurling. Includes annotation from Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, noting that the letter does not provide proof of the motives for the murder. |

Includes letters from Lieut HW Thompson, Chief Constable, Mullingar, to Maj Powell and William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting the murder and stating that Reilly is under the protective custody of Mr Hobbs, Chief Constable as he has received threats even from his own parents. Also letters from Thomas Powell, Corkagh, [County Dublin], to Gregory, advising that Reilly be sent to Dublin.
