Letter from Lieut Col DT Osborne, Moate, [County Westmeath], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, enclosing proceedings of an inquest into the death of Michael Nannery and wishing to know if there is legal grounds to proceed against [Owen] Carey. Includes sworn testimonies of James Carey, Betty Deavis and Honor Nannery of Belahy, Sarah Ryan of Balnakill and Samuel Duigan of Kilbeggan, surgeon. Witnesses claiming that Nannery was killed by a stone thrown by Joseph Condron during a dispute over the trespass of a bullock belonging to Owen Carey. Verdict of the inquest found Condron guilty of wilful murder and Owen Carey guilty of being an accessory to the crime. |

Letter from Robert Neville, justice of the peace, Marymount, [County Kilkenny], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, recommending that a gun powder licence be granted to Nicholas Power of Urlingford, who supplies blasting powder to several collieries in the area. Also asking for the authority to confiscate firearms from certain individuals whom he suspects harbour ‘some remnant of the spirit that once raged in Galmoy’. Also noting that Michael Nolohan, a prisoner in Kilkenny gaol has been identified as a cow stealer, formerly known as McRedmond. Includes memorandum noting that Power was granted a licence. |
