Includes legal opinion of Richard W Green observing that not enough evidence has been ascertained for a legal case. Also copies of the threatening letters signed ‘Captain Rock’ and ‘Captain Right’ warning farmers to have no dealings with Sargent who has ‘refused to grind for the poor store’. |

Letter from Col [Frederick William] Trench MP, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, enclosing a letter from John Martin, one of his tenants, whom he placed in a gatehouse cottage on his estate on account of his neatness and who has since received a threatening notice to quit his holding. Adding that he has requested Rev Henry Hunt, Kiltoom Vicarage, Athlone, to supply the man, who is an old soldier, with arms to protect himself. Also letter from Martin copying the notice he has received from ‘Captain Rock’ and the ‘Strolers of Curnasen’, warning him that they will come from Ballinafad to ‘pick the two eyes out of your head, and the arm of your body’, if he does not follow their orders. |
