Letter from Thomas Philips Vokes, Limerick, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, reporting on incidents of beatings and intimidation of valuators engaged in valuing tithes in three parishes in County Limerick and noting that he has arrested individuals in [Emlygrennan] and Crecora and issued stern warnings to the people of those parishes. Enclosing affidavits, discussing if bail should be granted and suggesting that police protection should be given to valuators. Includes related affidavits of Thomas Kenny of Curryglass, Maurice Darcy of Ballinvana, Patrick Quane of Bulgaden, John Barry of Limerick City, John Meade of Cahirconlish and James Gully of Inch. SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letters from Thomas Philips Vokes, Limerick, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, reporting that tithe valuators accompanied by an escort of 14 constables were attacked by a crowd of over 600 men dressed in white shirts in the parish of Emlygrennan; observing that he had directed most of his constables on that day to the fair of Dromin where a faction fight was supposed to have occurred but as this riot never materialised he suspects that it was a ruse; adding that an escort of 49 constables was given to the valuators and order was maintained and noting that property would be of little value in the area if such protection was not given. Also letter from James Keegan, Kilfinnan, to Volkes, providing an eyewitness account of the attack on the valuators. Also copy of order issued by Volkes, to B Jackson, Chief Constable. |

Letters from Thomas Philips Vokes, Limerick, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, enclosing affidavits and seeking advice on how to proceed in the case of James O’Brien, blacksmith of Tervoe, County Limerick who has provided evidence against a number of individuals having himself been arrested for committing outrages on the information of William O’Brien; noting how evidence provided in the affidavits can be used to corroborate facts; observing that William O’Brien in the past provided information which lead to the execution of two men. Includes evidence from Mary Lynch of Cloghataka, John Dwyer, Bridget and Michael Rourke, John Murphy and William Hedderman concerning attacks on houses and robberies, implicating James O’Brien. In his evidence James O’Brien testifies against Phillip Brin, Michael Lynch, Bryan Leahy and John Grady, William Conway, William Neville, Michael Doolan and others. |
