Also letter from N Herbert, Parsonage, [postmark Cashel, County Tipperary], to Gregory, reporting an arson attack on the house of [] Burke of New Inn, who was involved in the prosecution of [] Daniel for the murder of his brother and noting that Willcocks has removed the mounted police from his area.

Letter from J Whittaker, Chief Constable, Ballymote, [County Sligo], to Maj Warburton, Inspector General of Police, reporting on a disturbance in Ballymote where ‘a large party of county fellows’ marched through the town calling out ‘Five Pounds for an Orangemans head’ and ‘This is Lord Edward Fitzgerald’s day’. Adding that six men were arrested following an attack on the house of a publican named McDonagh and the stoning of the police. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary. Includes annotation from Richard Wellesley, requesting Warburton to state if he believes that Sligo is ‘organised and ready for Rebellion’ as forewarned by Whittaker.

Letter from George Warburton, Oatfield House, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, concerning irregularities in the selection of constables for County Mayo by the magistrates at Castlebar. Noting that the men nominated by the magistrates have yet to be sworn in and suggesting that they select men for the ‘Mayo augmentation from the Police lately reduced in Cork’. Includes annotation instructing that the magistrates be informed that if a similar irregularity occurs in the future the Lord Lieutenant will not confirm the appointments. Also related letter from Warburton, Aughrim, [County Wicklow], to the Clerk of the Peace for County Mayo.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from William Coffey, Acting Chief Constable, Tomgraney, [County Clare], to George Warburton, reporting that a gang of individuals ‘calling themselves Mayboys’ have severely beaten a father and son named Hayes, possibly because one of the gang had been accused of involvement in a robbery of Hayes’ house and reporting his attempts to capture a man named Maher. Also letter from John R Bindon, Chief Constable, Clonlara, [County Clare], reporting on outrages in his area especially around the village of Ardnacrusha following market days in Limerick. Both police officers note the absence of military aid. Also covering letter from Warburton, Oatfield House, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, observing that when the ‘ribbon system’ first appeared in Clare ‘they always paraded in the Character of May Boys’.

File of letters concerning evidence sworn by Mary Gouldsbury, Corry, County Westmeath against Michael and John Doyle who are accused of ‘ribbon men’ outrages

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Affidavit of Mary Gouldsbury, Corry, County Westmeath, claiming that she was attacked in her home by Michael and John Doyle who threatened to shoot her for ‘saying that Gurry’s straw ought not to have been burned’. Also letters from James West, Rath, [County Westmeath], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary and William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing the affidavit sworn before him, noting that the Doyle’s have been lodged in Mullingar jail and expressing concern for the safety of the witness. Adding that the husband of Gouldsbury denies any knowledge of the persons who committed the outrage, probably fearing for the safety of his family and has threatened to leave his wife and that all her neighbours now refuse to have any dealings with her. Includes annotation from JS Townsend, stating that the men can be bailed and advising against efforts to compel the husband to prosecute.

Naming the men as George Kenny of Ennis, John Cullen of Limerick and George Rice and John Leahy of Kanturk. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Oatfield House, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, claiming that Creagh is mistaken in his acts and that these men could have been selected by the magistrates for the constabulary at the time of the reduction.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Copy of letter from William Gardiner, Chief Constable, Easkey, [County Sligo], to Maj George Warburton, Inspector General of Police, reporting that walls and ditches belonging to Hugh Scanlan of Carroward have been levelled and the house of Martin Boland at Farnharpy has also been thrown down and his potatoes uprooted. Also reporting that a notice from ‘Captain Rock’ was posted warning persons not to send cattle to the farm of Doctor McHugh if the grass was not let at a lower specified price. Stating that the matter was investigated by Constable Neal of Screen. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Oatfield House, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that the large fairs in the area are now concluded and although there was a disposition on the part of the public to outrage they have passed off without bloodshed.

Letter from Richard Willcocks, Inspector General of Police, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing a resolution [extant] agreed to at a meeting of magistrates and gentlemen in Cashel which discussed policing and the Edward Murphy murder case; noting that a subscription is to be put in place to assist in the murder case; stating that he has agreed to establish nightly patrols using police who are to be moved from peaceful districts but adding that he would not agree to an increase in the military presence in the area; concluding that the attack on Murphy’s home at Ballinamona was motivated by plunder and that his murder was not premeditated. Also copy of resolutions and noting the names of the committee to oversee the subscription. [Contains list of names not given in this description]

Letter from Edward Wilson, Thurles, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that three suspects for the murder of Edward Murphy of Ballinamona have not been positively identified by William Murphy and his family. Noting that one suspect, Pierce Grace, a noted offender remains in custody. Reporting that the house of Robert Walsh of [?Kilcedy] was entered by four armed men and firearms were stolen and that the perpetrators escaped into the Bog of Allen. Includes annotation from Richard Wellesley, noting that ‘the state of this district is disgraceful’.
