Noting that the riot was between two factions named the ‘Hogans’ and the ‘Hickeys’, some of whom carried firearms, that almost 600 individuals were involved, that police and military from outside the area were sent to restore order and that amongst the dead was a deserter from the 84th Regiment who was carrying his stolen military musket.

Also letter from Longfield, Dublin, to Col Trench MP, 7 Bolton Street, Piccadilly, London, discussing estate management and requesting that Trench request Henry Goulburn to establish the station in order to deal with the ‘Rockites’. Also letter from FW Trench, to Goulburn, arguing for the establishment of the police station. Claiming that areas recently subjected to disturbances as reported by Col Irwin have been quietened by the presence of additional police but that the north of county is much disturbed.

Also letter from Charles O’Malley, magistrate, Castlebar, to Warburton, reporting on the incident, which occurred in the parish of Turlough, [County Mayo] and estimating that the mob consisted of over 200 persons.

Letter from Tomkins Brent, Chief Constable, Oranmore, [County Galway], to Maj Warburton, Inspector General of Police, reporting an attack on the house of [Edward] Synge, near Corofin, County Clare and the pulling down of Synge’s school house. Noting that a man from Ennis was caught in the act and that he has received information that an association in Ennis called ‘Friendly Societies’ plotted the attack. Noting that Rev Murphy, catholic priest of Corofin has regularly preached against Synge’s school and warning that the arrested man should not be visited by him in prison. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Castlebar, [County Mayo], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, noting that he is to send Brent to Clare for a number of days as ‘things are not as I should wish in that county’.

Acknowledging receipt of legal advice from the solicitor and attorney generals to constables in the execution of civil warrants for penalties under the fishery laws and other legislation. Adding that the Grand Jury and magistrates of Sligo are unhappy that they are now required to employ additional constables to undertake these duties.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from James Roe, magistrate, Roesborough, Tipperary, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, providing an eyewitness account of the faction fights at Kilfeacle fair, [County Tipperary], noting that shots were fired in the vicinity on the preceding night and that when the village was cleared the surrounding hills were filled with individuals, some of whom had travelled over twenty miles to fight; noting that the fighting commenced when the police retired and that a reported 15 persons have been killed; claiming that the factions in the Munster counties openly recruit members and lead armed men to every fair. Also letter from Richard Willcocks, Inspector General of Police, Cork, to Gregory, claiming that Roe has exaggerated his account as only one person has died; suggesting that Roe and the other magistrates should have remained in the village until the entire fair was cleared and that perhaps it was decided to ‘let the parties fight it out’.

Letter from Corker Wright, Rutland, Shinrone, [Kings County or County Offaly], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing evidence sworn by Malachy Donnelan, Chief Constable, [extant] who has received information from a man named Moylan concerning the robbery of Keenan, pensioner of King’s County; noting that Moylan has been sentenced to death for the robbery. Also copy of affidavit from Donnelan, identifying the felons as Patt Bullane of Nenagh, Patt Mullooney of Roscrea, Mary Gaynon alias Egan and Betty Corby alias Gaynon of the Pike, Kings County. Includes annotation from Henry Joy, Solicitor General, claiming that ‘nobody ought to be apprehended on this information’ from Moylan.
