Copy of letter from Lieut Andrew Carleton, Mohill yeomanry, [County Leitrim], to Brig Maj J Semple, Belturbet, [County Cavan], reporting that a crowd armed with farm implements marched in regular order, with fife and ‘something in the nature of a drum’ to the house of William Flinn of Brandrum, and threatened him to give up his lands at Drumnoght, which he had recently leased from Bary Norris, magistrate of County Leitrim. Letter from M Singleton, Chief Constable, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to Richard Willcocks, Inspector General of Police, Palmerstown, [County Dublin], reporting on his attempt, in conjunction with the Mayor of Clonmel and others to arrest two individuals who had arranged to have a fight in that town; noting that over 500 individuals had turned out to see the fight and that the police were pelted with stones resulting in a serious injury to Constable Johnston; claiming that the military were slow to come to the aid of the police. Memorial signed by 63 clergymen, magistrates and gentry resident in and around Killenaule, [County Tipperary], to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, requesting that a detachment of military be stationed in the town to deal with the ‘members of two adverse Factions who make Killenaule the scene of their Engagements’. Signed by a number of catholic clergymen and noting that the catholic church has been closed until the situation has calmed. Also covering letter from Rev Christopher Darby, Upham Glebe, Killenaule, writing on behalf of some of his parishioners who are peaceable resident farmers. Also letter from Richard Willcocks, Palmerstown, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, recommending that a party of 20 soldiers be stationed in the town, at least during the winter, in order to assist the police. Also letter from Nathaniel Taylor, [Naas, County Kildare], to Willcocks, noting that a desperate gang is active in the area whose chief objective is the acquisition of arms and ammunition and also warning that two factions intend to muster 300 supporters each to engage in a fight at Killenaule. Also memorandum noting that Sir George Murray is very unwilling to place a detachment in Killenaule as the area has many such detachments already.
