Letter from Edward Wilson, Thurles, [County Tipperary], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, reporting that 19 persons have been found guilty of rioting and faction fighting at the Quarter Sessions, and have been sentenced to between three and twelve months with hard labour on the tread mill. Warning that fighting with stones has become a serious problem and suggesting that it be made a transportable felony to wound someone using a stone. Noting that John [?Carmede] was recently beaten to death with a stone by John Ryan and John Hayes outside the town. |

Adding that the magistrates intend to counteract the measures through the Grand Jury and will call on their parliamentary representatives to encourage Henry Goulburn to amend the Constabulary Bill. Also covering letter from Warburton, to Goulburn, including annotation from Richard Wellesley, noting that there appears to be ‘an attempt to destroy the new Police’ which must ‘be resisted firmly’. |

Also copy of letter from [Richard Le Poer Trench, 2nd Earl of] Clancarty, Garbally, [County Galway], to Maj George Warbuton, recommending that the police be sent to protect Parr’s house to prevent this occurrence of ‘Rockism’. File of documents concerning allegations against two catholic priests, named Rev Denis O’Donnell and Rev Quirk of Tallow, County Waterfor; claiming that a speech made by O’Donnell outside the Petty Sessions caused a riot and that Margaret Hogan was publically horsewhipped and had her hair cut by Quirk, possibly because she was a prostitute; claiming that Thomas Molloy, residing at the Fever hospital, was struck by Quirk and was later attacked by a mob which later attacked the police barracks; adding that Rev Drew, [Church of Ireland] curate of Curryglass and Rev Henry Gumbleton have been abused by crowds.
