Adding that the two town constables are ‘utterly useless there’ and that William Cooke, sovereign of Athlone and Richard Handcock are in agreement with him. Also covering letter from Powell, Corkagh, Rathcoole, [County Dublin], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary. Also related letter from Cooke; a resolution recommending the proposal signed by Cook and Handcock and draft order from Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, authorising the appointment of 16 constables. |

File of letters concerning rioting which has occurred at Hilltown, County Down between catholics and protestants. Includes letter from Lieut Henry Nixon, chief constable of police, Hilltown, to Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police, providing an eyewitness account of a violent confrontation which occurred on a Sunday morning following religious services which resulted in the deaths of two catholics; giving an account of the aftermath including the coroner’s inquests into the deaths during which the jury also divided according to religious persuasion; claiming that he acted impartially and surmising that the dead catholics had been killed by their own side in the riot. Also copy of statements from Capt GA Ramsay and Maj St John A Clerke of the 77th Regiment, Newry, reporting on their intervention to protect the house and person of Mr Lindsay from an armed crowd who accused Lindsay of being one of the principle persons involved on the previous day.
