Letter from Col W Caulfield, magistrate, Benown, [County Westmeath], to [William Handcock, 1st Viscount] Castlemaine, reporting on outrages in his area including an attack on the house of Abraham Clandining, during which he was robbed of arms and beaten. Also affidavit of Clandining. Also letter from Viscount Castlemaine, Governor of County Westmeath, Moydrum Castle, [County Westmeath], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing the reports of outrages; also enclosing an anonymous letter from an extensive catholic landowner near Athlone [extant] reporting intimidation against him by ‘those night legislators’. Includes letter from anonymous sender noting that he cannot get workmen because of threats and illegal oaths made against him and adding that if it were known that he was communicating with magistrates, vengeance would be wreaked upon his property and person. Also memorandum by Richard Wellesley, proposing to refer the letters to Maj Powell for investigation and following Powell’s report to perhaps call a general meeting of the magistrates of Westmeath. Also memorandum [possibly by Gregory], requesting that Castlemaine be informed that an additional military force is being sent to the disturbed district.
