Letter from Maj S Carter, Doneraile, [County Cork], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting on a malicious fire to a stack of corn belonging to Patrick Barrett, farmer, residing close to Doneraile; observing that Barrett and his brothers have recently taken a farm formerly occupied by persons named Eddery who were evicted. Also enclosing two threatening notices [extant] sent to James Coughlan of Ballybeg, who recently took a farm previously occupied by the murdered Mr Croft. Includes threatening notice signed by ‘John Rock, Commanding Officer’ warning Coughlan to plough and let land to the poor and stating that ‘all the peelers under Carters command’ will not be able to guard him. |

Adding that Foley obtained the lease for the house following a competition with the Lombards and that Foley had encouraged a blacksmith called Murnane to bring legal proceedings against the Lombards. |

Also letters from Maj S Carter, Doneraile, [County Cork], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that the accusations against Curtain are most likely maliciousand that Curtain has attracted the enmity of the whole population by providing information which has led to the arrests of the following - Cotter, who has been convicted of the murder of Mr Brereton, mail coach agent; Timothy Sheehan accused of the murder; Murphy accused of the murder of Timothy Nunan. |

Praising Connors and observing that his employment would be more economical to government than the rate of pay he now receives weekly. Adding that the information provided by Connors on Whiteboy offences originated in confessions made to the priest of Ballyhea Parish. Includes annotation recommending that Connors be given a sum of money to leave the country. |
