Letters from John Wright and Andrew Ker, Newbliss House, [Co. Monaghan], magistrates, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting on their investigation of riots at Leesborough and Knockcor, County Monaghan, which was preceded by an unusual assembly of men and which exhibited alarming party spirit; forwarding affidavits taken from witnesses; noting that they have declined taking information from those deemed to be the aggressors but have referred them to another magistrate; suggesting that the crown solicitor be informed of the case. Also letter from Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police, Belfast, to Gregory, reporting that the riots were between parties of catholics and protestants who met on three consecutive Sundays at an orchard near Leesborough; adding that the protestants have sworn information before the magistrates at Newbliss and the catholics before magistrates at Rockcorry and recommending that the crown solicitor not become engaged in the legal dispute. Letter from George O’Brien, Chief Constable, Clogher, [County Tyrone], to Maj Thomas D’Arcy, dismissing a report made by Sgt Kearns that he witnessed a large armed party near Ballygawly; noting that Mr Montray and Mr Mulligan, magistrates in that area also are sceptical of the report. Also copy of affidavit of Kearns reporting that he met with between 60 and 100 men dressed in white shirts and carrying firearms and sidearms on the Clogher Road near Ballygawly. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John MacLeod, Chief Constable and Pay Clerk, Omagh, [County Tyrone], to Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police, providing an eyewitness account of a riot which occurred at the market at Fintona, [County Tyrone], whereby a large crowd of armed men assembled outside the village, with the intention of attacking protestants and attacked the police who came to disperse them; noting that information on the intended attacks came from Rev Brennan, priest and two respectable catholics of the town, Michael McEnistry and Michael McSorley, whose affidavits he encloses [extant]; stating that many travelled over 30 miles to engage in the outrage; acknowledging the assistance of Capt Lucas, magistrate and Mr Scott who assisted with a party of Revenue Police. Also covering letters from D’Arcy, Belfast, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, recommending that those arrested be tried at the next general assizes; concluding that the outrage was organised to avenge the beating of catholics which had occurred on the 6 January at Fintona; noting that about 1000 persons assembled armed with firearms and bludgeons.

Letter from James Dawson, Forkhill Lodge,[County Armagh], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, seeking the interference of the crown solicitor in a case against four men accused of the robbery of Patrick Duffy; noting that Duffy does not have the means to engage an attorney or pursue the case himself; claiming that the robbery was carefully planned and that a committee are raising subscriptions to defend those accused; stating that the trial is important in order to defeat the system of terror and scenes of perjury whereby false alibis are confirmed in his area; observing that Arthur Harrison, a witness in a previous trial has been intimidated since.
