File of papers relating to Richard Ashe, Macroom, requesting leniency for his servant, Mathew Reardon

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Memorial of Lt Richard Ashe, Oatlands, Macroom, County Cork, to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, requesting leniency for his servant, Mathew Reardon, who was recently convicted to 3 months imprisonment for the assault and attempted rape of Catherine Mullins, a local prostitute. Ashe claims that Mullins had ‘forgiven’ Reardon for a sum of 10s, but the case was tried notwithstanding; that the magistrate who oversaw the case, Robert Dedges, was an enemy of his and passed such a severe sentence in order to ‘annoy’ him; and that Mullins was enticed to accuse Reardon by one of Dedges men. Also letter from John Macan [McCann], Assistant Barrister in County Cork, 37 Upper Gloster [Gloucester] Street, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, outlining the case in detail, claiming that Reardon is not ‘a proper object of mercy’, and noting that Ashe’s memorial ‘does not even intimate that he is innocent’. Annotation on reverse of letter stating that ‘the law must take its course’ and recommending that the case be referred to the Attorney and Solicitor Generals [William Plunket and Henry Joy, respectively], 10 January 1827.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from J Dickinson, Clonshire, Adare, [County Limerick], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, enclosing copy of letter dated 5 December 1826 from PJ Burke, Police Orders, Croom, to the commanding Constable at Adare, ordering him to act in accordance with the wishes of the Inspector General, who stated that the police were to be no longer employed in ‘executing levy warrants or serving summonses’. Dickinson argues that this order is in direct violation of the law, and that a great many disturbances had been prevented by the police officers carrying out such duties.

File of papers relating to numerous applications made by and on behalf of William Norcott, Longford House, Collooney, [County Sligo], and Carker Lodge, Doneraile, [County Cork], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, and William Gregory, Under Secretary, for the position of chief constable of police. Claims he previously served as a Colonel with the 45th Regiment of Foot in the Peninsular War. Includes draft letter of reply, stating that due to the number of interested candidates, it would not be possible to secure him such a position, February 1823. Also document signed by 22 magistrates recommending Norcott for the position, 7 October 1823. Also memorial of Norcott to [Richard] Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, requesting that any negative references submitted in his name be forwarded to him ‘to satisfy his family connections and friends that his Character is not what it has been falsely and maliciously represented to be’, [c12] January 1824. Also letter from Lord Kingston [George King, 3rd Earl Kingston], Mitchelstown, [County Cork], to James Crofton [1st Baronet Crofton], Longford House, Sligo, stating that although he did not care for Norcott in light of his treatment of his brother, he had done nothing to injure his claim to the position of Chief Constable.
