TITLE:

File of papers relating to the building of Erris Road in County Mayo

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letters from Alexander Nimmo, [civil engineer], Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, in response to his letter following a number of complaints about the condition and cost of the Erris Road, [County Mayo], and in particular, a complaint received from [Maj] Denis Bingham, Bingham Castle, [Binghamstown, Belmullet]. Nimmo states that the project was begun by Bingham as well as Denis Brown and civil engineer William Bald, and was marked by ‘the greatest confusion and a heavy arrear’ when he took it over [c1823]. Outlines brief account of expenditure on the project to date, 27 January 1827. Second letter from Nimmo on this date, returning original letter of complaint from Bingham as well as report by Bald, which detailed the condition of the road and was directed at Nimmo personally, and stating that as he had dismissed these men from the public works in Mayo as a result of their ‘neglect and imprudent conduct’, such complaints and ‘this pretended report’ were designed to damage his reputation. Report by Bald contains list of townlands and bridges in Mayo.
