Petition of James Brown, Mountshannon, Scariff, [County Clare], to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, seeking employment in the police force in any county in Ireland. States he previously served with the 3rd Royal Battalion and the 77th Regiment of Foot. Also claims he was severely wounded defending the house of Thomas Sampson, Tomgraney, from attack by an armed group of Ribbonmen. Petition signed by James Martin, magistrate for Clare and Hugh B Huleatt, magistrate Clare and Galway, testifying to his character and version of events. Annotation on reverse referring case to Maj [George] Warburton, [Inspector General of Police in Connaught]. Also letter of reply from Warburton, Castlegar, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary.

File of papers relating to a legal case brought against Rev Robert Porter, Wicklow, County Wicklow, by the family of the recently deceased Robert Thomas, postmaster of Wicklow. Letter from Sir Edward [Smith] Lees, Secretary to the Irish Post Masters General, General Post Office, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing copy of letter he received from Thomas Thompson, Solicitor to the General Post Office, dated 25 May 1821, stating that from his examination of the case, he had decided to initiate proceedings against Porter, who was accused of exerting influence over William Williams, a guarantor for Robert Thomas who had defaulted on his debt to the post office, to alter his will in his favour in the days before his death. Includes letter from Porter to unknown recipient pleading his case, and from John Thorpe, 34 Harcourt Street, Dublin, to Porter, informing him that he has been authorised by Mr Fearon to take the necessary steps to enforce payment, 29 January 1827. Letter from Holmes Biggam, Athy, [County Kildare], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, seeking appointment as chief constable of police or any other suitable situation. States he previously served as Lieutenant with the 81st Regiment of Foot, and outlines his military service in Ireland and Europe since 1805 under the command of Lt Gen Sir John Moore, Lord Lynedoch [Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch], and the Duke of Wellington [Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington].

Letter from Rev John Dawson, vicar of the Union of Kilmore Erris and Kilcommon, Carne House, Belmullet, County Mayo, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, relating to the difficulties and ‘evil’ associated with holding markets in the remoter parts of the country, in particular in the Barony of Erris, with a population of 20000, where the nearest markets are held in Castlebar, Killala and Ballina, a distance of 40, 35 and 30 miles respectively. Explains that ‘the Sabbath day is uniformly and habitually profaned in the carriage of Goods, travelling etc. etc. … [and] Saturday markets generally usher in the Sabbath Morning with riot and intoxication’.

File of papers relating to application by H R Henry, Summerhill and Wellesley Place, [Dublin], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, for compensation in bringing a successful case against Lt Francis Begg, previously of the 6th Regiment of Foot, for the murder of bailiff Nicholas Byrne, who was subsequently sentenced to transportation for life. Includes letter from Sir Richard Birnie, Public Office, Bow Street, London, to G R Dawson, outlining the progression of the case and his communication with the Secretary at War [Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston], and [Henry] Hobhouse, [Under Secretary of State for the Home Office, and Keeper of State Papers]. Also letter from Henry to William Woods, Bow Street, London, stating that he merely acted as an agent to the prisoner [Begg], and that he had nothing to do with conveying him to Dublin [for imprisonment]. Also letter from William Kemmis, [crown solicitor], Kildare Street, Dublin, to Goulburn, stating that Henry’s assistance ‘was of no small advantage to the prosecution’, and recommending the award of £20.

Printed letter from G and J Grierson, Parliament Street, Dublin, to Roscommon and Leitrim Gazette, Boyle, [County Roscommon], requesting 2 copies of its account for the first quarter of the year ending 5 April 1826. Handwritten annotation stating that account was required for publishing under order from the Dublin Gazette Office, and could be posted free of charge to Alexander Mangin, [first clerk in civil department], Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle. Also states that an affidavit must be included at the end of the account testifying that its contents were ‘just and true’.
