Letter from Rev Philip Johnson, vicar of Derriaghy, Ballymacash, Lisburn, [County Antrim], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, requesting aid to build a new school house in Derriaghy parish after the previous school was lost in an accidental fire. States that he was told that his previous memorial on the matter had been referred to the Commissioners of Education Inquiry. Insists on the importance of making ‘every effort in our power to remove a great evil from a very considerable number of poor children suffering under the want of the necessary means of acquiring a degree of education that might contribute to their future welfare and happiness’.

Summary of details and evidence in case ‘on behalf of the Crown respecting the Conduct of The Reverend Mr Quirk, priest of Tallow [County Waterford]’, prepared by Kemmis and Carmichael, 11 November 1826, with legal opinion of William Plunket and Henry Joy, Attorney and Solicitors General respectively, 16 January 1827. Quirk was accused of assaulting Mary Brien, Tallow, ‘an unfortunate female residing with Michael Brien her reputed father, and both of them persons of the Worst Character’, by cutting off her hair, horsewhipping her, and threatening to kill her if she did not leave the parish.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Maj George Warburton, [Inspector of Police in Connaught], Castlegar, [County Galway], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing memorial of Thady Cuff, Strokestown, County Roscommon, to [Richard Wellesley], Lord Lieutenant, charging innkeeper Richard Hague, Strokestown, with assault and seeking an investigation. Claims that on 27 December 1826, approximately 80-100 youths gathered to play football in a field owned by Hague, and were given permission by his herdsman, Bartholomew Conway, but shortly after Hague arrived on the scene and assaulted him. Also encloses letter from James Payle, clerk of the Petty Sessions, Strokestown, to Capt Atkinson, Strokestown, stating that Cuff was identified as the ringleader of the gathering, and had been warned by Hague that he was trespassing on his land. Indicates subject was brought before the court on 5 January 1827, and was sentenced to a fine of 5s or 10 days’ imprisonment. Memorial indicates subject previously served with the 97th Regiment of Foot under the command of Col Duglass [Douglas].
