Letter from James Ellis Green, Mayor of Youghal, Youghal, [County Cork], to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, seeking advice relating to the conviction of Thomas Murphy, Youghal, under the Mutiny Act 1826, for taking and mutilating the uniform of John Mangan, deserted from the 22nd Regiment of Foot who had been stationed in the town. Green explains that as Justice of the Peace, he found Murphy guilty and fined him £5, but was unsure how to proceed as he could not afford this sum, and in the meantime, was being held in Youghal Gaol. Green states: ‘I consider it would be almost cruel to inflict punishment by having him privately or publically whipped’. Contains copy of notice of convection, dated 9 February 1827, originally signed by Green. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene, stating that fine could not be remitted. |
