Letter from William John Gore, Grand Jury Room, Wexford, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing petition received by the Grand Jury at the Spring Assizes, 1827, of several High Constables of several baronies in the county, seeking relief. The constables explain that due to a recent failure in the potato and oat crops in the area, the inhabitants are in a state of distress and poverty. Consequently, they have not been able to pay the county cess, and in turn, the constables state that they will have to resign if some fund is not made available to them. Petition contains 21 signatures. Annotation on letter by Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, stating that he wished to speak to Gregory on the matter. Letter from Harvey Pratt, foreman of the Grand Jury, Grand Jury Room, County Kilkenny, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing memorial of the Grand Jury of Kilkenny to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, outlining that a sum of £2958 18s ½d was advanced to the previous treasurer, Thomas Nowlan, for the building of post roads in the county; that Nowlan was subsequently removed from his position in 1822 and proceedings taken against him to recover the money, and his property ‘The Merino Factory’ was repossessed; and that the Grand Jury had continued to pay off Nowlan’s debt in instalments at every assize since then. Requests that the instalments be suspended owning to financial hardship, until an investigation into the circumstances has taken place. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene. Also draft letter of reply from Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, to Pratt; and letter from John Flood, Grand Jury Room, Kilkenny, to Gregory. Annotation on reverse by Gregory stating that he had informed Flood that [Richard Wellesley], Lord Lieutenant, could not interfere in the case, as directed by Greene and the Attorney General [William Plunket]. Claims that her husband Michael Francis McAnally served with the 95th Regiment of Foot in the peninsular wars until he was wounded in 1813; that in 1818, he joined the police but was sentenced to transportation in 1825 when he fired his musket in self-defence against a group of attackers; and that she wishes to travel aboard the next available transport ship with her 3 children to join him.
