SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of letters from Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms and All Ireland, Office of Arms, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, requesting the appointment of his son Molyneaux Cecil John Betham to the position of Dublin Herald, following the death of Thomas Meredith Winstanley, 23 January 1827. However, on 27 January, Betham forwarded on to Goulburn the memorial of James Rock, Athlone Pursuant of Arms, [County Westmeath], for the same position. In light of this, Betham states that he wishes to withdraw his application on behalf of his son, recommends that Rock be appointed as Dublin Herald, and suggests that his son be appointed as his successor in Athlone. Annotation on reverse of letter signed by Goulburn states ‘let this be done’. Indicates Betham’s son was just 14 years of age. Also memorandum by George Frederick Winstanley, nephew of the deceased, seeking appointment to the position.

Letter from [?R Manners], Athlone, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, to inform him that plans have been submitted to building of a new gaol or bridewell and courthouse at Moate, County Westmeath; a committee has been appointed to oversee the work; and it is hoped building will commence in Spring. Also letter from Robert Robinson, Board of Works Office, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, enclosing letter from William Murray, Architect’s Office, Lower Castle Yard, [Dublin Castle], agreeing to the terms of the building contract. Annotation on letter from Robinson signed by Lamb, stating that the contract was approved, 30 August 1827.

Letters from Dr Richard Stephens [Stevens], 17 Jervis Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, and William Gregory, Under Secretary, seeking compensation for attending to the poor at home ‘with considerable danger’ during the present epidemic, as there were no hospital vacancies. States he is employed as one of the physicians at the Sick Poor Institution in Meath Street, Dublin, and as an inspector at a rate of 6s a day. Also note stating that Stephens died in 1828, and noting alternate address of 36 North Cumberland Street, Dublin.
