File of letters from William Logan, 25 Marlborough Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, requesting an increase in salary. States that he is employed as an Inspector of the Four Courts Marshalsea, but that the recent Prison Act had imposed additional costs on him, 8 January 1827. Includes brief statement detailing Logan’s salary as £280 per annum – £180 for his wage as Inspector, plus an additional allowance of £100 awarded to him personally in light of his service as Peace Officer. Also copies of letters relating to claims for compensation made by him between 1800 and 1827.

Letter from David Babington, 8 North Great George’s Street, Dublin, to Thomas Taylor, Dublin Castle, requesting permission to circulate a copy of an order by the Lord Lieutenant, [Richard Wellesley], conveyed to him at a meeting the previous day, to the owners of the Inland Fishings, which stated that members of the constabulary force were to execute all warrants of civil magistrates except those relating to matters of rent, tithes, public assessments or revenue.

Also encloses copy of letter dated 30 December 1826 from the [Church of Ireland] Bishop of Killala [James Verschoyle], Killalla, to Gore, stating that he would be happy for him to become resident near Killalla ‘and to know the satisfaction of [his] Society’. Petition of Thomas Plunkett, Soldier, unknown address, seeking ‘the smallest relief’ to buy a coffin for his child. Also statement of service and character reference by Capt S Webb, Fairview Avenue, Dublin, detailing Plunkett served with the Rifle Brigade, and listing his commanding officers and the engagements where he was involved, including being wounded at the Battle of Waterloo, 18 January 1827. Also letter from Francis White, 4 Upper Camden Street, Dublin, to unknown recipient, stating that because Plunkett did not include his address in his petition, they could not find him to grant him relief, but states that if an address can be found, his case will be dealt with as a matter of urgency, 20 January 1827. Includes statement by unknown author detailing that Plunkett cannot be found, and may now be in London, 23 January 1827.

Includes letter from [Sir] Richard [Henry] Willcocks, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Limerick, to Goulburn, forwarding on a letter sent to him by M Fitzpatrick, Chief Constable of Police, Dunmanway, [County Cork], stating that Gillman had previously been deprived of his position as a magistrate, and that the was ‘a man of most arbitrary character and universally disliked’. Letter from Hartstonge Robinson, 12 Ely Place, [Dublin], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, in application for a position as barrister to the Solicitor of the Board of Excise and outlining his career history. States that his grandfather was Justice Robinson, second judge of the King’s Bench; that he was first called to the Irish Bar in 1814; that he was appointed as Junior Counsel on the Home Circuit to the Board of Excise in 1816; and that he was most recently employed as a Commissioner with the Commission of Crown Lands in Ireland. Encloses letter from John Charles Herries, Treasury Chambers, to the Commissioners of the Crown Lands in Ireland, stating that the commission was of a temporary nature, and that it had now served its function.
