File of documents concerning the dismissal of Lieut Edward Ring, Chief Constable of the barony of Kinalea, County Cork. Includes letters from W Miller, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, enclosing all the documents in this file and also making recommendations for the dismissal of Ring and Constable Richard Jones, noting that Ring ‘has acquired such habits of inebriety that no hopes can be entertained of any reformation’. Also memorial of Ring, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, arguing against his removal as recommended by a meeting of magistrates; enclosing copy of a medical certificate from Dr Thomas Paye, North Cork Regiment stating that he was wounded in an attack on his father’s house by a gang of Rockites in 1823; enclosing copies of letters of recommendation from Lieut Col Robert Frederick and Lieut Col Alexander Hogg of the 55th Regiment and copy of letter from Henry Goulburn dated March 1827 recommending Ring’s son for a position. Also letter from John Gallevey, Local Inspector, Ballincollig, [County Cork], to Miller and certificate from Capt Lawson, reporting that constabulary horses have been removed from the care of Ring in lieu of rent owed for the police station. Includes annotation from Richard W Green, stating that [Edward] Roberts had no right to distrain the police horses in lieu of rent. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from W Miller, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that he has been filling vacancies in the constabulary with men selected from the Peace Preservation Police under the command of Mr Wilson, on the understanding that the latter force is to be gradually disbanded. Noting, however, that Wilson is continuing to recruit to his force despite instructions to the contrary from government. Adding that the Mayor of Clonmel has been using a constable to detect publicans selling spirits on the sabbath which is contrary to the regulations prohibiting the constabulary’s involvement in Revenue matters. Includes annotation from Richard W Greene, providing legal opinion in agreement with Miller.
