SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letters from [Richard Butler, 2nd Earl of] Glengall, Cahir, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, requesting that Mr Barry, Chief Constable of Johnstown, County Kilkenny be transferred to Cahir in the barony of Iffa and Offa, [County Tipperary] where his abilities are needed to quell disturbances; observing that Mr Percy, Chief Constable of Cahir is willing to make the exchange and that Maj Powell agrees with the proposal but that [John Hely Hutchinson, 2nd Earl of] Donoughmore and Mr Wilcock are opposed; noting that Barry is a native of Cork and adding that nine out of eleven chief constables of County Tipperary ‘are connected and related to families resident in it’. Also memorandum by ‘GM’ noting that this is a matter for the Inspector of Police. Also draft reply to Glengall, [probably from Gregory], Dublin Castle, noting that it is not intended for Barry to remain in Cahir on a permanent basis. |
