TITLE: |
File of papers relating to the robbery of a carpet from the state apartments at Dublin Castle |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Lady Isabella Fane, housekeeper and wardrobekeeper of Dublin Castle, [], Ringwood, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, relating to the theft of a carpet from the state apartments on 9 October 1827 [see CSO/RP/1827/1799]. States that the legal opinion expressed by the law advisor [Richard W Greene], namely that the theft constituted ‘gross negligence and breach of duty’, is ‘somewhat extraordinary and erroneous!!!’ Enquires what control she has over her assistant, ‘who I did not appoint; and of whom I know nothing: but who may be a fitter person to reside in the state apartments, and take charge of the furniture than myself’. Also letter from assistant housekeeper Margaret Ashe, Epsom, Surrey, [England], to Lamb, stating that she ‘deeply lament the occurrence of the robbery… and that His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant should consider me guilty of a gross dereliction of my duty… in not residing in the apartments provided within the castle.’ Explains that in 1802, she was instructed to leave the premises by the then Lord Lieutenant, ‘for the use of this own family or some of the officers of his household’. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene, stating that her account appears to exonerate Fane ‘from the charge of neglect’, but that she must now appoint some person ‘to take the actual care of the apartments’. Additional letter from Fane to Lamb, again voicing her disagreement with Greene’s observations, stating that the apartment should be returned to Ashe, ‘so that she may discharge her own duties; or that such an arrangement may be made with her, as shall enable her to have them properly performed by some one else’. Annotation on reverse of this letter [?by William Gregory, Under Secretary], enquiring if Fane’s patent is ‘during pleasure or for life’. |
