Letter from Maj William Miller, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Dublin, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, outlining his reasons for granting a gratuity of 10s to each of the 16 men of the County Limerick Constabulary who were required to immediately transfer to County Tipperary to preserve the peace. States ‘under the existing system, the active officer of Justice is put to inconvenience and expense, from which others of less merit are exempted. His duty, therefore, conflicts with his interest; and, under such circumstances, the worst consequences may be expected to result to the Public Service’.
