Memorial of Rev John McGowan, catholic parish priest of Rosinver, County Leitrim, to the Lords Chief Justices, seeking to have a fine of £20 levied against him refunded. Noting that he incurred the fine from a case brought against him by one of his parishioners, Charles Ferguson, who accused him of assault. Noting that Ferguson was denied entry into his church on account of his refusal to contribute to a collection for the construction of a new gallery in the churc. Adding that Rebert Johnston, chairman of the Quarter Sessions is acquainted with the case. Includes annotation initialled ‘AH C’ [possibly Anthony Hart, Lord Chancellor] stating that of all the appeals he has seen this is the very least deserving of favour as it would sanction a priest to levy a tax on his parishioners a ‘form a precedent most mischievous to the existing establishment’.
