Letter from William Law, Arva [Arvagh, County Cavan], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, claiming that a fraud has been practiced upon him by an imposter calling himself ‘Major PM Kennedy 23rd Almuty Regt of the Portuguese service’ whom he had supported for three months while in his town. Enclosing copies of ten letters [extant] and adding that he was induced to surrender the originals to someone in the War Office named O’Sullivan. Includes copies of letters from R Willimot Horton, Crime Minister of State, War Office, to Kennedy, Mohill, [County Leitrim], mainly offering promises of money from government; from William Law, to Lord Palmerston, querying Kennedy’s bona fides; from O’Sullivan or L Sullivan, War Office, to Law, requesting the original documents.

Includes memorandum stating that the Lord Lieutenant does not have the power to appoint magistrates and that this power is vested in the Lord Chancellor and also recommending that Rev [John] Dawson be appointed a magistrate. Also letter from Gregory, to the Lord Chancellor, noting that Dawson would be suitable for a magistrate’s position in County Mayo and that Peter Daly is also a suitable candidate for the commission of the peace.

Memorial of Thomas Steele of Cullane Castle, County Clare, writing from Holmes Hotel, Parliament Street, [Dublin], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, recommending that a survey be made of the River Shannon between Limerick and Kerry Head and Loop Head and noting that he proposed a plan to improve navigation on that river between Limerick and the Oran River which was approved by the Chamber of Commerce of Limerick and pilots who operate on that river. Noting that he is an associate member of the London Institution of Civil Engineers.
