Enclosing copies of documents supporting his claim and noting that his children are the grandchildren of the late Maj Daniel Francis Houghton of the 69th Regiment of Foot who died in 1792 during the ‘arduous task of making discoveries in the Interior of Africa’. Letter from Lieut RJ Morrison, [Royal Navy], Ardmore, County Waterford, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, observing that the police have been instructed not to assist in preventing the ‘felonious plunder’ of shipwreaks ‘without the especial order of a Magistrate’ and noting that the necessary delay in obtaining such an order allows mischief to be perpetrated. Mentioning the plundering of the sloop ‘Mermaid’ and the assaults made on the crew who were wreaked at Whiting Bay, [County Waterford] by a crowd of over 600 people and the failure of the police to offer assistance. Includes annotations citing legal advice. |
