Memorials of James Greacy [Gracey], Newry, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, on the subject of the immediate and permanent relief of the poor of Ireland through stimulation of the linen trade. Recommending that old and young females be encouraged to spin yarn and that duties on American tobacco be reduced in return for a reduction on import duties on linen entering America. Also discussing the political benefits of such a move including a reduction in radical prejudice, increased land values, the settling of the Catholic Question and increased law and order. Also letter from Gracey, 15 English Street, Armagh, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, stating that the ‘affairs of the poor … should not be entirely disregarded’ ‘for the higher and more important business of parting and dancing’. Letters from William Fyers, R Smith, W Booth, John Butcher and S Thomas, Office of Ordnance, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary and William Lamb, Chief Secretary, expressing concern that John Reddan has erected a premises at Davy’s Lane, Limerick, 22 feet from the Ordnance Magazine containing gunpowder and ammunition, in which he has installed a kiln and flue to render lard. Proposing that private property gunpowder be removed from the stores until the encroachment case is settled. Also a monthly statement noting the names of merchants who have received quantities of gunpowder from the government magazine. Also letter from John Redden, Limerick, to Gregory, objecting to the suggestion that he be made liable for the removal of gunpowder to Cork.
