TITLE:

Report on a case against Major Samson Carter, chief magistrate of police, County Cork, for ‘falsely imprisoning two females’

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Cover letter from [Major Henry Charles Sirr, chief magistrate, Dublin] to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing a short report from Michael Farrell [chief constable of police], Cork, on a legal hearing at the assizes of Cork involving a case against Major Samson Carter, chief magistrate of police, County Cork. Also encloses copy letter from Farrell to the magistrates of the head office of police, Dublin, reflecting on the action against Carter for allegedly ‘falsely imprisoning two females’. Explains the crux of the charge against Carter is that he detained in Cork the girls and their father [Mr Barry] and thereby prevented their evidence being heard in support of ‘Magner’, one of the suspects in the murder of the Franks family of Lisnagoorneen [who were murdered by the Whiteboys in 1823]. Observes the prosecution appears to be instigated by ‘Molony’, ‘Bullen’, ‘McCarthy’ and Father O’Connor, and is apparently ‘conducted through the influence of the Catholic Association’.

TITLE:

Letter from the magistrates of County Tipperary reporting on the outbreak of a violent faction fight in the town of Tipperary

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from the magistrates of County Tipperary, Tipperary, County Tipperary, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on a violent faction fight involving ‘a large body of men’ in the town of Tipperary on the 12th of May. They observe the men, about 1600 in number, ‘attacked each other with great violence’ and had it not been for the joint exertions of the magistrates, the police and rank and file of the 84th regiment of foot under the command of Captain Boyle, vary serious harm to life would have resulted. They regret to add this was not an isolated incident but rather forms part of a wider series of organised group hostilities where parties with a perceived grievance against one another overstep the legal authorities and ‘fight their own battles’. Signed by J St Ledger and 8 other magistrates. [Contains list of names not given in this description]
