SCOPE & CONTENT:

Copy of order signed by 19 magistrates sitting at Loughrea Quarter Sessions, [County Galway], ordering that County Galway be exempted from the provisions of the Petty Sessions (Ireland) Act 1827 and claiming that the act’s proposal to divide counties into districts for the purpose of holding court sessions would impede the administration of justice and lead to a subversion of the current courts of petty sessions. Includes annotation from Richard W Greene, stating that the magistrates are not authorised to exempt the entire county and also legal opinion of Henry Joy, Attorney General. Also covering letter from James Kelly, clerk of the peace, Loughrea, to [Richard Trench, 2nd Earl of] Clancarty. Also forwarding letter from Clancarty, Garbally, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, recommending that recent ‘Experimental Legislation for Ireland’ be ‘somewhat checked’ or applied to ‘some other country better able to bear it’. Also copy of letter from William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, to Clancarty, stating that the proceeding adopted by the magistrates was not authorized under the act. SCOPE & CONTENT:

Resolution signed by 20 magistrates of County Donegal assembled at Lifford Quarter Sessions, addressed to the Lords Justices stating that an additional 30 police constables are required for the baronies of Raphoe and Kilmacrenan. Also covering letter from William Edward [Mason], Lifford, [County Donegal], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, enclosing the resolution. Also letter from James Sinclair, magistrate of Donegal, Glasnevin, [Dublin], [probably to William Gregory, Under Secretary], stating that the majority of Donegal magistrates are opposed to the increase and enclosing returns to support that stance; includes annotation stating that no other objections have been voiced to the proposal and that the Lord Lieutenant has decided not to change the decision of the magistrates. Also returns of unexecuted warrants for Kilmacrenan and those received by James Taylor, Chief Constable, dated 1827 to 1828, noting the names of individuals against whom warrants have been issued and names of complainants.
