Legal case on behalf of the crown relative to the offices of the sub sheriff of counties Westmeath and Kings [County Offaly], for the opinion of the attorney and solicitor generals; including allegations from [George Nugent, 1st] Marquis of Westmeath that the office was illegally traded in order to retain control of the position within a group of individuals. Also letters from Nugent, Governor of Westmeath, Clonyn, [County Westmeath], to the Commissioners of Enquiry, outlining how incorrect appointments have been made; mentioning in this context Mr Whitney, William Cuffe, George Palmer, Robert Hodson and Col James Hearne. Also report of the Commissioners of Inquiry into the Duties of Officers and Ministers of Justice in Ireland, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, noting that they ‘have no longer any cognizance of abuses’ as reported by Nugent.
