Also letter from EA Douglas, Chief Constable, Ballibay [Ballybay, County Monaghan], to Gower, forwarding a printed address [extant]. Includes printed address to the catholics of Ulster from the Catholic Association, signed by Bartholomew Corballis and Edward Dwyer; mentioning the influence of the Orange Order over the magistrates, police, yeomanry and sheriffs; warning catholics against ‘all unnecessary or Tumultuous Processions and Assemblies’ and secret societies; advising them to hold themselves in readiness for ‘Simultaneous Meetings’ in the following year and to cultivate good feelings with dissenters and protestants but to hold no intercourse with ‘the Orange Assassin’.

Letter from John Richardson, John [?Murray], Alexander [?MacKenzey] and Richard Murray, magistrates, Dungannon Petty Sessions, [County Tyrone], probably to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, stating that it would not be prudent to interfere between Rev Bridge and his congregation in their dispute over the meeting house at Castle Caulfield, [County Tyrone] so long as no assault is committed by either party. Also recommending that the request for personal protection from Bridge be declined.

Memorial of Edward Smith, Ballinahatty, Omagh, County Tyrone, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, reporting on an attack on his public house by an armed gang calling themselves the ‘Creevan Boys’ following the fair in the town; claiming that the gang was made up of members of the Creevan Yeomanry who carried their yeomanry guns. Also letter from Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General, Omagh, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, enclosing copies of depositions from Edward and James Smith [extant] and clarifying that the Creevan Yeomanry Corps is no longer in existence. Also letter from Samuel Galbraith, magistrate for County Tyrone, Omagh, to D’Arcy, noting that he and Mr Eccles, magistrate, could find no evidence of a shot being fired into Smith’s house.

Letter from H Dillon Massy, George Lloyd and Joseph Wallplate, magistrates, Doonass Petty Sessions, County Clare, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, concerning the appearance of an accused before them wearing the badge of the ‘Order of Liberators’; noting that the culprit was Peter Nihil, publican of Killaloe, who was accused of assault by Francis Clancy of O’Brien’s Bridge; recommending that Nihil’s publican’s licence be withdrawn. Copy of letter from William F Ebhardt, Chief Constable, Cootehill, [County Cavan], to Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General, reporting on an orderly procession of peasants through the town, carrying spades and headed by fiddlers, who were headed to dig potatoes for Charles Coote of Bellamont Forrest. Also copy of letter from John Hazlett, Swanlinbar, County Cavan, to D’Arcy, noting that he witnessed a regular procession of over 200 men carrying spades who had been engaged in digging potatoes for the parish priest; warning that the people regard the Catholic Association as their government and fearing that if the catholic claims are not met with by parliament that they will attempt to enforce them ‘by the Sword’.
