Letter from George MJ Drought, Limerick, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, responding to a request from government for accounts of speeches made by Thomas Steele, and in particular any calls from Steele for ‘the people to be quiet by their allegiance to the Catholic Association’. Also claiming that Steele has previously spent time in private asylums and suggesting that he could make a plea of insanity should a prosecution be brought against him. Enclosing a copy of ‘The Limerick Evening Post and Clare Sentinel’, dated 5 December 1828, which includes a printed letter from Steele, President of the Limerick Chapter of Liberators, to Daniel Geary, Secretary to the Limerick Chapter of Liberators.

Noting that Doyle is a protestant having converted from catholicism and is now a member of the yeomanry. Includes copies of notices signed Captain Rock calling Doyle a ‘turncoat bloody rascal’ and warning him to quit his lands or he will ‘have a pike in place of an orange Cockade’ and ‘a turf in your thatch’.
