Noting that Molony was instrumental in the clubs formation and on the day of the inaugural meeting at Stamers Hotel, marched at the head of a detachment of military and constabulary into the town in an intimidatory manner. File of documents concerning a large march of individuals at Eyrecourt, [County Galway] with the intention to oppose a meeting of a Brunswick Club in that town. Includes letters from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar and Eyrecourt [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that the principal individuals involved in a daring march have been charged; praising the conduct of Robert Blake, Chief Constable, whose discretion prevented loss of life. Also letter from [Christopher Butson, Church of Ireland Bishop of] Clonfert, Clonfert, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that his son, Archdeacon Butson, has travelled to Banagher to request Mr Armstrong to provide reinforcements for Eyrecourt. Also letters from Blake, to Warburton and Gower, forwarding a notice advertising a prohibited meeting and reporting on the march of over 600 people marching in military order with accompanying music towards the house of Capt Alleman, magistrate, and a subsequent attack on the police and their barracks; warning that a further march is to be attempted to prevent a future Brunswick Club meeting; forwarding copies of affidavits [extant] against some of the leaders of the march, sworn by James McGee, sub constable and James Ireland, constable. |
