Includes letters from E Jenkins, Local Superintendent, Dundalk, [County Louth], to John Harvey, Inspector General, reporting that an inquest has found that Patrick Mathews and Bernard Clarke were shot at Mullacrew Fair, [County Louth], by Robert Turner and another constable; adding that Sgt Scott was seriously injured in the incident; stating that the party of constables were attacked by a mob of over 200 persons while attempting to arrest Patrick Curtis who had been accused of assault by a man named Malone. Letter from Rev Hugh B Huleatt, magistrate of counties Clare and Galway, Clonrush Glebe, Scariff, County Clare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, providing an account of a confrontation he had with Pat Sheehan, publican who refused to remove a flag with the image of Daniel O’Connell on it from the public road. Recalling how he took down the flag and tore and trampled on it which lead to a picture of Lord Nelson being ripped and trampled on and disloyal toasts being made, which was followed by arrests. Noting that Lieut Mandeville of the 64th Regiment, stationed in Mountshannon attended the scene and that Messers Yates and Hickman, crown solicitors are dealing with the case. Includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene, stating that the arrests were not permitted in point of law. |
