Letter from Joseph Carraher, constable, Newbridge, [County Kildare], to Capt ES Flinter, Rossmore Lodge, [County Kildare], reporting on a large meeting of over 400 men and the decoration of houses as directed by the local priest in anticipation of O’Connell’s entry into that town; mentioning William Abbott whose house was not decorated and Maj Badcock of the 8th Huzzars stationed in the town. Also covering letter from Flinter, Chief Constable, to John Harvey, Inspector General, also mentioning the decoration of Kildare town. Also covering letters from Harvey, Portarlington, [Queens County or County Laois], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, concerning the events in Kildare and also transmitting the presentment agreed by the Grand Jury of Longford for the constabulary in that county signed by James Geoffroy, secretary.

Copied extract from Capt J Dyas, Sub Inspector, Annefield, [County Kildare], to John Harvey, Inspector General, noting that the magistrates at Johnstown Bridge have recommended that the party of constables from Blackwater Stopgate be relocated in Kilmurry, near Kilglass, [County Kildare] where a fine house is available. Also covering letters from Harvey, Portarlington, [Queens County or County Laois], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that the constables at Stopgate are to be replaced with a party of constables from the Meath Constabulary.

Letter from Lieut R Simpson, Local Superintendant, Affray, County Longford, to John Harvey, Inspector General, reporting on an affray which took place at Gilsha, in the barony of Granard, between a party of orangemen returning from a parade in County Cavan and a group of peasantry, which resulted in the shooting of a man called Flood; adding that a meeting of magistrates found that the orangemen were justified in firing on the crowd. Also covering letters from Harvey, Portarlington, [Queens County or County Laois], to William Gregory, Under Secretary. Also letter from WA Williamson, ex officio coroner, Longford, to Gregory, reporting that an inquest into the death of Anne O’Brien, determined that she was shot and that James Wilson may have been responsible.

File of documents concerning a confrontation which occurred at the funeral of Styles at Baltinglass, [County Wicklow], where Rev James McGhee, magistrate and protestant clergyman issued orders and a warrant to the constabulary to prevent the interment in his churchyard unless conducted by protestant clergyman using protestant rites. Includes letter from JM Hobson, Baltinglass, to Maj Tandy, noting that the constabulary received a warrant from McGhee. Also letter from John H Hatton, Baltinglass, to Tandy, forwarding a copy of the warrant which has been ‘frightened’ out of McGhee, which claimed that Styles was a protestant and that his eldest son wished for him to be buried as such. Also covering letter from James Tandy, to John Harvey, Inspector General and related letter from Harvey, Portarlington, [Queens County or County Laois], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding a report on the incident.

File of documents concerning an affray at Callan Fair, County Kilkenny, which resulted in one fatality and indications of party spirit in Abbeyleix, [Queens County or County Laois]. Includes letters from BC Urquhart, Chief Constable, Kilkenny, to Harvey, noting that the police and magistrates were stoned in Callan when attempting to quell a riot between two factions at Callan Fair and suggesting the party of constables in the town be exchanged to reduce tensions; adding that Samuel [?Hauton] and Thomas [?Hickie], sub constables have been arrested on the charge of killing Michael Ryan during the riot. Also letter from [] Foott, Chief Constable, Abbeyleix, to HB Wray, Local Inspector, noting that a drunken man named Case, was beaten having denounced ‘O’Connell and all Rebels’ in the street and that party feeling is being aroused by the ‘Harangues of O’Connell and other Popish Demagogues’. Also covering letter from HB Wray, Maryboro [Portlaoise, County Laois], to John Harvey, Inspector General. Also letter from Richard King, Chief Constable, Enniscorthy, probably to Harvey, reporting on the relative peaceful passing of the 12th of July in the town. Letter from A Hill, Cloheen [Clogheen], Buttevant, [County Cork], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding an affidavit of Patrick Daly [extant] accusing Rev Cotter, catholic curate of using seditious language but noting that he is not prepared to come forward publically against the priest; noting that the priests in general have called for unity between the factions and no drinking or fighting at fairs; expressing suspicion at a proposed meeting allegedly to bring about a truce between the factions calling themselves ‘three and four years old’; noting that protestants who refused to illuminate their houses in Doneraile had their windows broken.

Letters from W Miller, Inspector General, Clonmel, [County Tipperary], and Limerick, [County Limerick], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, noting that a compromise proposed by Lord Clare and agreed to by all parties, brought to a halt the investigation of the complaint from Mr Vokes, Police Magistrate against Mr Haly, Chief Constable. Noting that the matter was investigated by Miller in conjunction with the Mayor of Limerick.
