Copy of letter from Mathew Barrington, Crown Solicitor, Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding the confession of Frederick Johnson [not extant] concerning the murder of Dr Lee of Wells and noting that when cross examined in Kinsale, Johnson admitted that he fabricated the story in order to get himself hanged ‘as he was tired of this life’ and would have ‘committed suicide long since if he had opportunity’. Adding that Johnston was anxious to get transferred from the 22nd Regiment to the East or West Indies or even into a ‘condemned corps’ and had planned to assassinate some of his officers. Recommending that he be kept in Kinsale Bridewell. |
