Letters from Thomas Tenison, magistrate, Keadue, [County Roscommon], to unidentified recipient, reporting on the murder of Mr Cox, Director of the Arigna Iron Works, who was from England; noting that he is old and that his fellow magistrate is confined to bed with gout; noting that copies of affidavits and offers of rewards have been sent to Messers Hichman and Yeats, crown solicitors. Also letter from James Reid, Chief Constable, Boyle, [County Roscommon], to Maj Warburton, Inspector General of Police, providing an account of the murder and warning that the locality is in an agitated state and that a military party was sent to Cootehall to offer protection to the harbour police and constabulary. Also memorandum noting that an additional reward of £300 is to be offered along with a pardon.

Letter from Daniel Todd, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, noting that Saint Patrick’s Day processions have long being tolerated in his neighbourhood as long as they remained free of party feeling but regretting that recent processions have been assuming a different tone; seeking advice on the legality of processions ‘composed exclusively of Persons of one religious persuasion’. Also draft reply from unidentified official noting that the civil and military forces may be called out when a breach of the peace is feared but that they should not be used except in a case of absolute necessity. Letter from James Tandy, magistrate, Millbank House, Naas, [County Kildare], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding a copy of an anonymous letter [extant] received by Rev Hyland, parish priest of Dunlavin, [County Wicklow], which was posted in Kilcullen; noting that Hyland is anxious to put down the lawless spirit and has frequently ‘admonished his flock’. Includes letter to Hyland, criticising him for denouncing the perpetrators of the crime committed at Brewers Hill and calling on him to take a patriotic view on the eviction of poor and wretched families by ‘the Landjobbing tribe’ who ‘exercise their tyrannical and oppressive construct over their poor disposed and oppressed Catholic Tenants’.

Includes reports noting the specifics of individual outrages, including the arrest of Michael Tobin and John Carroll, accused of the murder of Darby Tracey at Clontafe, County Tipperary, the absconding of Christopher Maher who has been accused of raping Madge Fitzpatrick and an attack on the house of George Beaghan of Blackhall in the barony of Naas.
