Letter from [Charles William Bury, Lord] Tullamore, Tullamore, [Kings County or County Offaly], reporting on the arrest of a man named John Kennedy of [Clonwilan], County Galway, who appears to be insane. Noting that Kennedy was discovered drinking in a public house despite being handcuffed and in irons and claims to have been abandoned by his brother some miles outside the town in consequence of a quarrel. Adding that he had the keys of his handcuffs, a forged letter and some money in his pockets. |

Letter from John Willington, J Willington, Daniel J Webb and James Butler, magistrates, Templemore Petty Sessions, [County Tipperary], [probably to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary], reporting on a procession which took place in their town with the avowed object of reconciling two factions which passed without disturbances. Noting that the ‘actors in this Farce were in appearance and array ridiculous and absurd’ and that the magistrates abstained from interference. Adding that they were again harangued by ‘the Borrisoleigh Schoolmaster’ using inflammatory and treasonable language but noting that the priests of Templemore recommended their parishioners not to take part in the procession. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
File of documents concerning large ordered processions in a number of towns in County Tipperary, the participants being mainly catholics supporters of O’Connell, wearing green ribbons and marching in military order, and using the occasion to mark reconciliations between feuding factions; documents consist of letters and affidavits from magistrates and police officers warning of planned marches, providing eyewitness accounts, noting the inadequate size of the military and police forces to deal with the vast crowds and seeking advice from government on what measures to take. Includes letters, mainly addressed to the Chief Secretary and Under Secretary, from the following – from John Cooke, Sovereign and Robert Cooke, William Barton and Benjamin B Bradshaw, magistrates, Fethard; from Samson Carter, Cashel; from William Nash, Chief Constable, Roscrea; from W Chaytor, Mayor, Clonmel; from Capt JJ Sargent, 58th Regiment, Roscrea Barracks; from Lieut Col J Wiltshire, Military Secretary, Royal Hospital, Dublin; from John Cooke, Sovereign, Fethard; from WP Vaughan, Golden Grove, [Kings County or County Offaly]. Includes printed handbill announcing a ‘grand and splendid reception’ to be held in Tipperary Town on September 21st; also printed address to ‘the Roman Catholics of Tipperary’ from the Catholics Association of Ireland welcoming the cessation of feuds but dissuading them from organising these large meetings. Also related resolution signed by four magistrates, Tulla Petty Sessions. Includes anonymous notice claiming that Woods is ‘a corrupt Orange rascal and an enemy to every true Catholic’. |
