Affidavit of James Gubbins of Knocklong, County Limerick, swearing that following the withdrawal of Hugh Massey, magistrate and constabulary from the Knocklong Fair, an armed party began a riot which lead to the shooting of Mathew Hickey, his servant boy and a man named Bowes; identifying Timothy and Patrick Leddin, Mr Hurley, Oliver Magrath, Patrick Henessy and Mat Keane as being involved. Letters from [Joseph] Darnes, Chief Constable, Nicker, [County Limerick], to TP Vokes, reporting that Rev Dalton, catholic coadjutor of Abington harangued his congregation in support of O’Connell and the [Catholic Rent], which was followed by verbal abuse being directed against the constabulary; also noting that 40 men carrying a flag depicting O’Connell marched through the village. Also letter from Walter Hussey Burgh, Dromkeen, Pallasgrean, [County Limerick], to Vokes, reporting on a bonfire and similar procession at Kilteely which stopped to shout outside the houses of protestants and which knelt outside the catholic chapel; adding that the procession was comprised of members of the ‘three and four year old factions’ – who walked linked arm in arm together under the title of the seven year olds’. Letter from George N Bennett, Bosnetstown, to Charles Bennett, 3 Cecil Street, Limerick, seeking to have himself or James Ellard appointed magistrates in order to deal with the large assemblies, some of them involving the three and four year old factions. Also letter from Thoms Doolan, Chief Constable, Hospital, to Thomas Phillips Vokes, reporting on assembles of the same factions which amounted to 1500 men. Also letter from H Woodburn, Chief Constable, Ballingarry, to Vokes, reporting on a large night time bonfire attended by 6000 men at Dromin, which was reported to him by James Casey of Dromin; also noting the names of 13 men he interrogated in the public house of William Cullinane in Ballyscanlan. Also newspaper clipping reporting on a meeting of catholics at Glin, County Limerick, extracted from the ‘Limerick Chronicle’.
